Once I started cooking regular meals from scratch, I also started paying attention to the ingredients in everything. One area that I have been recently trying to switch to homemade is condiments. This includes condiments for dinner, dessert, breakfast, really anything that I add to a dish. If you look at the ingredients of a lot syrups they have artificial dyes that have not so great side effects. Since I live in California and can’t tap my own maple tree, I decided to leave that syrup to the cold weather farmers. I did decide to make fruit syrup from scratch. Fruit syrup can be used on pancakes, waffles, oatmeal, yogurt, ice-cream, and even added into your lemonade. If you are looking for a delicious gluten-free pancake recipe we have you covered as well.

Fruit Syrup Made Easy

One of my favorite things to have in my freezer is frozen fruit. It is so versatile and is handy to grab whenever you need it. We use our frozen fruit to make gelato, smoothies, syrup, muffins and much more. This makes it easy to make change what type of fruit syrup we want to use each time, without having multiple jars open in the refrigerator. Our top 5 fruits for syrup are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, cherries and peaches. We get our fruit from local farms, clean, prep and freeze or we get 5lb boxes from Azure Standard.

Sourcing Bulk Ingredients

Most of my ingredients I try to source in bulk. I do enough cooking and baking from scratch that it is more cost effective for me to purchase in bulk. If you are interested in building your pantry on a budget, I highly suggest checking out Azure Standard. I can order from them once a month if I want to, which I don’t need to do that. I then meet a semi-truck at a specific drop location. Everyone purchasing helps unload all the product for that drop and then we take our goods and head home. I have saved so much money this way.

I also have a great source for vanilla beans and make my vanilla extract and vanilla sugar in bulk. If you have not started to purchase in bulk, I highly suggest you start. Take the time to do a price comparison, especially on spices and flours. Now let’s get to the recipe…

Notes

This syrup is great on pancakes, waffles, ice-cream and in lemonade. It will store in the fridge for a couple of days. For longer term storage, store in freezer until needed.
