There are some flavors that as soon as you taste them you are transported back into time. You remember exactly where you were, what you were doing and how you felt in that moment. Orange creamsicles do that for me. I take one bite and I am 7 years old running through the sprinklers at my childhood home wearing a bathing suit and laughing as hard as I can. Capturing that in taste of summer in a frosting was my goal. This vanilla orange cream cheese frosting transported me back to that moment with every bite, it is an orange creamsicle in frosting form.

This frosting would be perfect on any vanilla cupcake recipe. If you are looking for a delicious, moist, gluten-free cupcake recipe make sure you check out this recipe Gluten-Free Vanilla Cupcakes. It will pair perfectly with this frosting and everyone will enjoy it. My best friend said no one would even know it was gluten-free if you didn’t tell them.

Making It Dairy Free

There are a lot of people who not only have a gluten allergy, they also can’t have dairy. My best friend has to really be careful with her dairy intake, so when she was here we made a dairy free version. Both my daughter and her loved it! We use the Oatly brand cream cheese and the Country Crock plant cream. If you don’t have to be dairy free I would just follow the recipe that I share below. I look for heavy cream without carrageenan in it, due to the fact that everything with that in it causes me to swell. The simpler the ingredients the healthier it is for you. Unless you have an allergy and then you go for the healthiest for you particularly.

Sourcing Bulk Ingredients

Most of my ingredients I try to source in bulk. I do enough cooking and baking from scratch that it is more cost effective for me to purchase in bulk. If you are interested in building your pantry on a budget, I highly suggest checking out Azure Standard. I can order from them once a month if I want to, which I don’t need to do that. I then meet a semi-truck at a specific drop location. Everyone purchasing helps unload all the product for that drop and then we take our goods and head home. I have saved so much money this way.

I also have a great source for vanilla beans and make my vanilla extract and vanilla sugar in bulk. If you have not started to purchase in bulk, I highly suggest you start. Take the time to do a price comparison, especially on spices and flours. Now let’s get to the recipe…

Calories 117 kcal

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream cold
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 8 oz cream cheese room temperature
  • 1 2/3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract

Instructions

  • Add cold heavy whipping cream and vanilla extract to stand mixer bowl. Mix on speed 4 until it thickens. It should hold its shape and be spreadable, like cool whip.
  • Put whipped cream mixture into another bowl or large measuring cup and set aside.
  • Add the room temperature cream cheese, powdered sugar and orange extract to the bowl of the mixer.
  • Mix completely until smooth.
  • Pour whipped cream mixture into the bowl with the cream cheese mixture. Use a silicone spatula to fold whipped cream into cream cheese. To fold, you will gently flip(fold) the ingredients on the bottom of the bowl to the top. Repeat this motion until everything is completely combined. You do not want to “stir” or overwork mixture.
  • Use a spoon or butter knife to spread frosting on to cupcakes.
  • Frosting can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator until ready to use. It will stay fresh for a few days.
