TURKEY POT PIE RECIPE (Gluten-Free)
After being outside on a cold winter day, there is nothing like coming in to eat a delicious turkey pot pie, hot out of the oven. In reality any meat, veggies and broth tucked in a pie crust sounds perfect on a cold day. If you have never made a pot pie it is super easy and absolutely delicious. It is also the perfect way to get your non soup lovers to eat all the healthy ingredients of a soup.
This recipe is what I call a loosie goosy recipe. It is never exactly the same twice in our home. The vegetables will change depending on what we have in the house. The spices we use will vary depending on our mood. I want to make sure that you know that the recipe below is a loose guideline. What makes pot pies delicious is that they are baked with love and feel like a hug on a cold day. So have fun and use whatever meat you have, whatever broth you have and whatever vegetables you have. Thicken with arrowroot powder and pop it in the crust.
The Crust
When making eating a pot pie, the crust can make the dish or break it. I think this is one of the reasons that you don’t readily find gluten-free pot pies in the most grocery stores, at least not around here. I recently shared a recipe for a delicious flaky gluten-free pie crust that is perfect for pot pies. My husband who has not been the biggest fan of the “gluten-free flavor” that you find in a lot of gluten-free foods loved this recipe. He said the great thing is it’s not gluten-free, I laughed and said well actually… It is! I honestly think that has been one of my favorite things about starting this blog and really focusing on developing delicious gluten-free recipes, converting his opinion of gluten-free food.
THE CHRISTMAS KITCHEN – A GLUTEN-FREE HOLIDAY MADE EASY (E-BOOK)
We love to make memories building gingerbread houses or frosting cookies to give away. Making homemade ornaments or simmer pots that make the house smell better than a candle store. We gather together as a family and make things together. All the while laughing, talking, remembering and most importantly opening our hearts to one another.…
Sourcing Bulk Ingredients
Most of my ingredients I try to source in bulk. I do enough cooking and baking from scratch that it is more cost effective for me to purchase in bulk. If you are interested in building your pantry on a budget, I highly suggest checking out Azure Standard. I can order from them once a month if I want to, which I don’t need to do that. I then meet a semi-truck at a specific drop location. Everyone purchasing helps unload all the product for that drop and then we take our goods and head home. I have saved so much money this way. For example, the items I have purchased in bulk for this recipe are: the sugar, salt, apple cider vinegar and gluten-free flour in the crust and the arrowroot powder, all of which I get from Azure Standard.
In the winter we stock up on turkeys when they are on sale. This allows us to get a large amount of meat and broth for an incredible price. My husband and I really love turkey broth and turkey meat more than chicken. We will eat chicken broth and be just fine, but we love turkey broth, especially turkey bone broth.
I also have a great source for vanilla beans and make my vanilla extract and vanilla sugar in bulk. If you have not started to purchase in bulk, I highly suggest you start. Take the time to do a price comparison, especially on spices and flours. Now let’s get to the recipe…
Turkey Pot Pie
Ingredients
- 1/2 Recipe Flaky Pie Crust (Gluten-Free)
- 1-2 Tbsp Avocado Oil
- 1 Onion Medium
- 1 Carrot Large
- 5 Radishes
- 2 Celery Sticks
- 3 Red Potatoes
- Seasoned Salt to taste
- 1 Tbsp Basil
- Pepper to taste
- 1/2 tsp Smoked Paprika
- 1 tsp Dehydrated Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Rosemary
- 1 Tbsp Dehydrated Bell Pepper
- 1-1.5 pints Turkey Bone Broth
- Turkey Meat
- 2 tsp arrowroot powder
Instructions
- Make your pie crust recipe and have chilling in the refrigerator.
- Add avocado oil to a medium pot on the stove and turn heat on to medium, medium/low.
- Chop and add your vegetables to the pot. You can use any variety of vegetables you have on hand I am just sharing what I used in the video I made. I usually chop and add each vegetable in this order; onion, carrot, celery, radish, potato. This allows the onion and carrot to cook longer then the radish and potato. Stir Occasionally.
- Add in salt, pepper and herbs of choice. I used seasoned salt, basil, pepper, smoked paprika, rosemary, dehydrated minced garlic and dehydrated bell peppers. Heat until veggies are translucent, and herbs are softened.
- Add bone broth and turkey meat to the pot and allow to come to come to a boil.
- Whisk in arrowroot powder one tsp at a time. Leave on heat for 3-4 minutes. Then turn it off and let it cool.
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Remove pie dough from the refrigerator. Roll out bottom pie dough to an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch thick. You will want to roll it between 2 layers of parchment paper.
- Fit pie dough into pie pan. Clean up any edges and fill any holes.
- Roll out pie dough for the top of pot pie.
- Whisk 1 egg and set aside.
- Pour turkey and vegetables into the pie pan. You will want to move through the next steps quickly so your filling doesn't melt the butter in the pie crust.
- Place top layer of pie dough over the pie and press into the edges. Remove excess dough and fill in any holes.
- Brush egg wash over the entire top and edges of pot pie.
- Slice a few vent holes into the top layer of pie dough. This will allow the steam to escape and stop your top layer of crust from breaking where you don't want it to.
- Bake for 45 – 60 minutes at 400 degrees. Until top and edges are all golden brown.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes.
- Slice, Serve and Enjoy.
