HOW TO MAKE TRICK OR TREATING ALLERGY FRIENDLY

As Halloween approaches, the store shelves quickly empty of the all the candy. Sugary treats are the trick or treat tradition as of late, this isn’t the way it always was. People actually did tricks, and soul cakes used to be handed out. I could easily run down the rabbit hole of how much money is spent on candy that isn’t good for kids, and most of which the parents end up throwing away. But I won’t bore you with what you already know. I do want to talk about how to make trick or treating allergy friendly though.

There are so many kids who have allergies to peanuts, dairy, wheat and so much more. When my daughter went trick or treating after finding out she had to eat gluten-free, only 1/4 of her haul she would even consider enjoying. That left the other 3/4 for my husband and I, and anyone we could share with. I will say that it is extremely hard for kids, and kind of ruins the fun of it all. So today I want to share some ideas with you that might help give you some ideas of non-food items that you could hand out. Items that wouldn’t be adding to the sugar load but instead add to the creativity of their minds.

THE GREAT PUMPKIN SCAVENGER HUNT

$2.00

People love to decorate for fall and for Halloween.  It is becoming popular in our area to go look at neighborhoods that are decorated, just like we go look at Christmas lights.   This scavenger hunt is a fun and easy activity to do with your family and friends.  *This Printable is also found in my…

All of the items I have listed below are Amazon Affiliate links. Which means I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

This pack of party favors has something fun for everyone. It is 1000 pieces for only 33.99 at the time I am posting this, plus a $5 off coupon. That is less than $30 for 1000 goodies to give away. That is cheaper than buying 1000 pieces of candy. Another perk of a set like this is that if you don’t hand them all out, you have them ready for next year.

Every kid I know loves Crayons. This box of crayons I bought a few years ago to melt down into fun shapes. I made rainbow crayons with them in lego shapes. The kids loved them. So buy them and hand them out, or buy them and melt them down and then hand out the fun shapes. These also make fun stocking stuffers.

What kid doesn’t love Glow Sticks??? This set looked like it was a decent price, and had fun colors. You could have them already formed into bracelets, ready for the kids to enjoy. Or you could have it ready to go in stick form, not activated with an adapter on the end.

This option is a little pricier, but it would for sure be a favorite. Every kids and adult loves bubbles. These cute little bottles with stars on top are sure to be a hit with any trick or treater that comes your way.

These mini dinosaurs could provide hours of fun and are not something that quickly end up broken in the trash. Plus you get 82 of them for just under $10. This is actually one of my favorite ideas on this list. I wish I would have thought of it when we handed out candy.

Slingshot chickens just are funny and would be a great source of laughter. It would kind of be a trick and a treat all on in one.

These slap bracelets bring me back to my childhood. There were also Halloween themed ones on Amazon, but I thought regular ones would be worn for a longer period of time. I know my daughter loved it when I got her some of these.

Another item that is in with the kiddos lately are the silicone bracelets. I chose some motivational ones, but there are some with scriptures, plain, and all types of sayings on them. This is another item that would last a while and be a memory. You can even order them with custom print on them.

These little guys looked unique and fun, so I had to add them to the list.

Last but not least on our list are temporary tattoos. These fun Halloween print tattoos are always a hit at any event. Getting them instead of candy when I was kid would have made my day.

Pencils are another fun and useful gift to hand out. These neon pencils are fun, but not holiday specific. They also have a decent number of good reviews. These are another item that would be good for many more Halloweens, and events.

I hope that these give you some ideas and that you are inspired to think outside the box this Halloween. You can look for bulk toys or bulk party favors on Amazon and see the reviews, and how quickly it can get to you. Keep in mind items like Playdough have wheat and would be an allergen to kids with celiacs. You should be able to find something that is allergy friendly, healthier than candy and still a great treat for the kiddos at the door. I would love to hear what you decide to give away this year.
