As I have wandered down this winding road called my health journey, I can’t help but read ingredients on everything. I don’t have the capacity, or the skill set to be able to make everything from scratch, but there are a few things that are simple to make. In all honesty, I like them better than most store-bought options. Lip Balm is one of those things.

I made lip balm a couple of years ago, but it wasn’t my favorite, and I didn’t put in a convenient container. So, for Christmas this year I played around with the recipe and created a product that I love. I was so sad when my tube went through the washer and dryer. My daughter, husband and aunt all love this lip balm. What is great is that it doesn’t have any petroleum in it so my aunt can use with her oxygen. As always, I am not a medical professional, if you are on oxygen, please verify with your doctor that these ingredients are ok for you.

I have enough loved ones spread around the country that would love to make their own as well. So, I decided it was time to share the recipe with them and with you. Be prepared to become addicted to this smooth like butter, can’t live without, lip balm. If you are curious why I am making my own skincare I would check out my bog post about it Why I Make Homemade Skincare.

Quality Ingredients

Just like the food we eat, the ingredients in our skincare is important. The better-quality ingredients, the better-quality product. That is one of the things that I love about making my own skincare, I get to decide!

  • Coconut Oil – I purchase my coconut oil in bulk from Azure Standard. This is the same coconut oil that I use to cook with. I just buy the gallon container and it lasts a long time.
  • Beeswax – I hope one day to have a local supplier, or harvest my own beeswax, but I don’t have either right now. So I use this particular beeswax from Amazon. I look for organic, no additives and cosmetic grade.
  • Shea Butter – I purchase my shea butter from Amazon currently, this is the one I have purchased many times. I would love to find another bulk supplier. If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments.
  • Essential Oils – We have a wholesale account with Doterra, I love their products and quality. I know there is mixed opinions about essential oils, MLM companies and so forth. My suggestion is to do your research and make the decision that is best for your family. I did and I chose Doterra for us. I use their Madagascar Vanilla Essential Oil and their Peppermint Essential Oil. If you are interested in purchasing oils through Doterra you can use this link.

Instructions

  • Add some water to small pot and put on the stove on medium heat.
  • Place double boiler on kitchen scale. If you turn the scale on while double boiler is on it, it should automatically be 0. If it shows any weight "Tare" the scale and zero it out. Set the units to grams, "g".
  • Add coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax to double boiler. Zeroing the scale out between each one.
  • Place double boiler on pot of water. If you have too much water empty some. It is important that the water not come up to the edge. We do not want water in the double boiler.
  • Heat on medium until all ingredients are completely melted. Your coconut oil will melt first, then the shea butter and last will be the beeswax. You want to make sure all beeswax is completely melted not just translucent. (Stir every once in a while to evenly distribute heat in the double boiler)
  • While everything is heating up on the stove you can prep your lip balm containers. I prefer the little plastic ChapStick tubes, or small amber jars. The size of the container will vary on how many finished lip balms you get. I usually do a mix of containers; this recipe should make at least 48 ChapStick tubes of lip balm.
When using the tubes I like to verify they all work, have the lids off, and rubber band them all together to keep them upright.
  • Once everything is melted turn off the heat and remove double boiler from the pot. Dry bottom of double boiler.
  • Add in essential oils and stir well.
  • Pour into ChapStick tubes. I like using a narrow funnel to help lessen the mess. If you are using plastic tubes do not worry about it if you spill over. It will clean up easily. If you have any air bubbles come up you may need to add a little more to the top of each container to make it even.
  • Allow to cool completely. This may take a couple of hours. If using jars it can take longer. The larger the container the longer it will take for the center to cool.
  • Once cool, using a paper towel, wipe down the edges of each tube. Everything should remove easily.
  • Seal each tube with their lid. At this point you can do a final wipe down with a little vinegar on your paper towel. This will break down any remaining oils.
  • Label and Enjoy!
